Both Premiership clubs were drawn against tough opponents in a Uefa Cup group stages draw held in Switzerland.
Middlesbrough was drawn against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in group D, alongside Grasshopper Zurich, Dnipro and Litex Lovech. AZ Alkmaar, who are leaders of the top Duch League reached the semi-finals in the last years Uefa Cup competition.
Bolton will play in Group H, together with Vitoria Guimaraes, Sevilla, Besiktas and FC Zenit. Three clubs from each group will qualify for next round. Boro reached the last 16 in the last Uefa Cup season where they lost to Sporting Lisbon, while Bolton is taking part in their first ever European campaign.
