Rampant Middlesbrough inflicted humiliating defeat on Manchester United who are now 13 points behind the Premiership champions Chelsea. The match started badly for United when Edwin van der Sar failed to save Gaizka Mendieta's shot and handed over the lead to Boro in the 2nd minute.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was swift to punish Rio Ferdinand's defensive error in the 25th minute and increase Boro's lead. Yakubu Ayegbeni converted the penalty shot just before half time and Boro started the second half with a convincing 3-0 advantage. Manchester United dismal performance continued into the second-half of the match allowing Mendieta to score his second and Boro's fourth goal in the 79th minute. Christiano Ronaldo scored the only goal for United in the 90th minute.
Manchester United's poor display against Boro comes a week before they are due to face leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The north London derby between fierce rivals Tottenham and Arsenal ended in 1-1 draw. Tottenham took early lead, but Paul Robinson's defensive error enabled Robert Pires to equalize end prevent Spurs from beating the rivals for the first time in 13 matches.
