Crystal Palace knocked out European champions Liverpool from Carling Cup and reached the last 16 of the competition. Both sides created number of chances, however Liverpool strikers failed to score more than once.
Palace went ahead after 37 minute when Dougie Freedman headed home Michael Hughes' cross. Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard returned to the team after a shin injury and scored the equalizer three minutes later with a fine 20 yard strike. It was Gerrard's 50th goal in Liverpool shirt. Both sides missed a few chances before half-time, however the best chance for Palace was denied by the referee Phil Dowd when he awarded a free kick to Palace instead of giving advantage to Tom Soares with a clear opportunity to score.
Reds increased the pressure after the break, however their inability to score was punished in the 66th minute through Hughes who scored a winner for Crystal Palace after a fine pass from Reich.
