The clash between two giants Liverpool and Chelsea finished in a goalless draw. It was a hard-fought match were the chances were few and far between.
Liverpool had three penalty appeals turned down by Italian referee Massimo de Santis. The claimed the foul play in the 19th minute when Sami Hyypia appeared to have been brought down by Didier Drogba. They were awarded a corner instead. Luis Garcia was challenged by John Terry and Paulo Ferreria in the Chelsea area in the 51st minute Portuguese defender pulled his arm back by when through on goal.
The third penalty appeal was ignored seven minutes later when William Gallas appeared to handle the ball after Jamie Carragher headed goalwards from a corner. Chelsea failed to create any clear-cut chances, with the best attempt made by Frank Lampard after seven minutes of play. His free kick was diverted around the post by the Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina. The other Champions League results:
