Freddie Ljungberg's early strike and second half-penalty converted by Robert Pires gave Arsenal well deserved Champions League away win. Ljungberg scored the opener after only 80 seconds of play. Pires doubled the lead after Reyes was brought down in the box by Ajax goalkeeper Hans Vonk in the 69th minute. Ajax immediately responded with Tomas Galasek hitting the post and only two minutes later Rosenberg scored for Ajax.
The Gunners dominated the match, while Ajax was only the shadow of the team that once dominated European competitions. Ajax had their spells of good play and created several chances, but Arsenal were in control of the match.
Manchester United struggled against Benfica at Old Trafford, but Ruud van Nistelrooy's late strike gave United 2-1 Champions League win.
