Middlesbrough 0-2 Sunderland

Sunday, 25 September 2005Middlesbrough 0-2 Sunderland

Sunderland moved off the bottom of the Premiership table after their first win this season against Middlesbrough. It was their first win in 22 league matches since December 2002, leaving Everton at the bottom of the table.

Tommy Miller scored the opener after only 90 seconds of the game. The goal prompted Boro into fierce attack and Sunderland was forced deep into their half to defend the lead.

Sunderland keeper Davis made two fine saves, first from James Morrison and second from Yakubu after some poor defending. Sunderland retaliated in the 60th minute from the controversial free-kick.

Refree Howard Webb overruled the linesman's off-side flag and rewarded the free-kick to Sunderland. Arca scored the second by curling a free-kick over the wall.
