Rooney received two-match ban

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been banned for two Champions League games following last week dismissal in the United's Champions League game against Villareal.Rooney was sent off for clapping in referee Kim Milton Nielsen's face after receiving yellow card.

He has been handed an extra game by Uefa after Nielsen reported Rooney for swearing at him before leaving the pitch. Any appeal against the ban has to be lodged before Friday midnight.

Rooney is set to miss two Champions League games at Old Trafford. Manchester United is due to play Benfica on 27 September and Lille on 18 October.

Rooney was also booked during England's match against Northern Ireland resulting in one match ban. He will not be eligible to play in the next England's World Cup qualifier against Austria on 8 October.
