England and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen has signed for Newcastle United for a club record fee. Owen passed a medical on Tuesday and signed a four-year contract. Newcastle United paid Real Madrid £17m for Owen, £2 million more than the price paid for Alan Shearer.
Owen was keen to rejoin Liverpool, who sold him to Real Madrid for £8m, but the price tag put up by Real Madrid was to high for Reds. The 26 year old received hero's welcome at St James' Park, around 20 000 Newcastle supporters turned up to witness Owen signing for the club.
