Drogba's lucky strike sinks Gunners

Sunday,21 August 2005Chelsea - Arsenal

Didier Drogba's lucky goal gave Chelsea three points in their first win against rivals Arsenal since 1995. Drogba came off the bench to score the winner in the 72nd minute. Philippe Senderos failed to clear the cross and the ball hit Drogba's knee before rolling over the line beyond helpless Jens Lehman.

The game that ended in defeat for Gunners, was Arsen Wenger's 500th as Arsenal's manager. The both sides however, had long spells of uninspiring play, although Chelsea's attack created more opportunities for scoring. The closest they came in second minute when Freddie Ljungberg cleared Asier del Horno's header off the line.

The Blues have not lost a Premiership match since October 2004, 31 matches in all. Freddie Ljungberg's injury will be of particular concern for the Gunners. He was stretchered off the pitch in 26th minute after collision with the advertising board.

In the other Premiership match Bolton lost at home 1-0 to Everton.
