Xabi Alonso's first-half free kick gave Liverpool 1-0 win, however Red's boss Rafael Benitez will have to reflect on his team's performance against ten-men Sunderland. Andy Welsh was sent off in the 74th minute for a challenge on Luis Garcia.
Liverpool seemed disorganised after their captain Steven Gerrard left the pitch after 55 minutes due to calf injury. He was replaced with Luis Garcia, and he is almost certain to miss the Champions League match against CSKA Sofia. Although Sunderland put a stiff resistance, Liverpool created several chances. Djibril Cisse missed three good opportunities to score. Sunderland also missed a few good opportunities, but their faith was sealed with Welsh's unfair dismissal. TV replays showed very little contact between Welsh and Garcia.
