England coach Sven Erikkson has accepted blame for the row regarding Alan Smith decision not to take part in England's friendly against Denmark. Smith, 24 decided to skip national team match and play for United's reserves in order to increase his fitness level.
FA chief executive Brian Barwick expressed his disappointment with Smith's decision and even implied it could mean the end of his international career. However, Erikkson said he has given permission to Smith to play for Manchester United and made it clear that he is still counting on United's midfielder. Smith on his part stated his wish to play for England and insisted that his withdrawal was not intended as a snub.
