The Gunners are playing their final season at Highbury, and the turf was marked with the letters "Highbury 1913-2006". They created quite a few chances, but failed to capitalize on Jenas's dismissal until late in the game.

Newcastle United defended well with ten men and grew in confidence until N'Zogbia's challenge on Ljungberg gave Arsenal irreversible advantage.

The champions Chelsea also started with 1-0 win at the newly promoted Wigan Athletic.
