Fernado Morientes scored twice in the Champions League match against CSKA to help Liverpool beat Bulgarian champions. Steven Gerard's top performance marked another good day for Reds in the elite European competition.
Liverpool will be on their way to the group stages of the Champions League unless CSKA stages a miracle come back in the return leg match on 23 August. Reds took the lead in the 25th minute after Gerrad's pass to Cisse who sent the ball into the net past CSKA's keeper Evgheni Hramuc. Morientes increased Liverpool's lead in the 31st minute with a fine header.
Velizar Dimitrov scored in the last minute of the first-half to give CSKA a lifeline. Morientes drove a shot through Hramuc's legs in the 58th minute to score his second and third for Liverpool. Hamaruc's magnificent save denied a hat trick to Morientes in the 61st minute.
