Champions League: Liverpool 2-0 Kaunas

Tuesday, 02 August 2005Liverpool FC

Red's captain Steven Gerrard took a center stage yesterday and led his team to 2-0 win against Lithuanian side Kaunas in the Champions League second qualifying round. Gerrard came from the bench in the 75 minute and took only 2 minutes to provide a breakthrough the Liverpool supporters were long waiting for.

Kaunas's strong and determined defence managed to stop Liverpool's strikers from scoring. Mali international Mohamed Sissoko 25 yard kick went inches wide just before half-time.

Liverpool's attack showed more imagination after Djibril Cisse replaced Fernando Morintes in the 46th minute. Cisse's partnership with Peter Crouch created several chances.

However the breakthrough did not come before the 77th minute when Gerrard scored the opener, while Cisse scored the second four minutes from time.
