Celtic displayed a magnificent performance and came close to a miracle against Slovakian side Artmedia in the Champions League second qualifying round. They lost first leg match 5-0 and came within a goal of forcing extra time in what would have been the greatest comeback ever in Champions League history.
The opener came relatively early in the game. Maciej Zurawski won a penalty and Thompson scored from the spot in the 22nd minute. Hartson increased Celtic's lead just before half-time. McManus scored the third with a header in 54th minute . Beattie came from the bench in 63rd minute in place of Zurawski and headed the fourth goal for Celtic in the 82nd minute.
With eight minutes left Celtic pressed hard for the fifth goal that would have given them extraitime. But Artmedia managed to hold on to their lead and Celtic bowed out of Europe to the Slovakian minnows.
